How to prepare for the EVI in English in 2026

The Unified Entrance Exam is a test for bachelor’s degree holders applying for a master’s degree and one of the tests for master’s degree holders who wish to enter graduate school and obtain a third academic degree.
It is divided into two parts: TZNK (testing general competence) and EVI in a foreign language.
The EVI in English will be held in two sessions in 2025:

  • main: June 21 – July 12;
  • additional: July 29 – August 18.

This exam determines whether applicants have a sufficient level of English to continue their education, to understand scientific texts, and conduct academic communication in a foreign language environment. The candidate’s chances of admission directly depend on the test results.

The exam is comprehensive, has a similar level of difficulty to the NMT, and requires careful preparation in advance. This is especially true if the student has been focused on another subject for several years prior to the exam.

How to effectively prepare for the EVI in English

Since there is no listening section on the EVI now, students need to focus most on understanding written text. This means that the usual tips for studying (listening to audio recordings, watching TV series) do not work here. Reading as much as possible in English is the answer to how not to get lost during this exam.

Move from simple to more complex grammar topics

If you start by reviewing simple tenses, conditional sentences, endings, and articles, you will avoid the obvious mistakes that students so often regret. Over the years, even the simplest things are forgotten, even when your foreign language level is steadily improving.

Practice the exam regularly

The website УЦОЯО – Ukrainian Center for Educational Quality Assessment has sample tests and official expert advice for preparation. A professional teacher will help you practice best, accompanying your attempts and explaining each mistake. They will also provide conditions similar to those of a real exam – setting a time limit and prohibiting the use of hints.

Increase your vocabulary

Write down every unfamiliar or forgotten word when you read a text. Create a dictionary, constantly repeat these words, and you will see significant progress over time. Along with a larger vocabulary, your understanding of grammar and language function will develop.

Tips from AP University

Create a clear study plan

Study every day, 1-2 hours on certain days and 15 minutes on others. This pace is normal; you need to maintain it and stay focused. Discipline is not about giving your all in every session, but about daily consistency.

Spaced Repetition

Repeat at intervals. New information is perceived by short-term memory, while long-term memory stores it and transforms it into knowledge. In order not to forget what you learned a month ago, you need to refresh the information in your head from time to time.

Learn qualitatively, not quantitatively

Work through less material, but devote more attention and time to exercises. Don’t rush to cover everything at once — that’s why the topics are divided into sections and have a sequence. That’s why we recommend starting your preparation early.

Be confident

Students have a significant advantage over applicants. They have already taken exams and know how difficult this period is. Make the most of your experience — remember what helped you pass your exams last time.

Frequently asked questions and answers about EVI preparation in English

How long does the EVI last, and how many tasks are there?

Candidates are given 45 minutes for the EVI foreign language section. What are some common mistakes when preparing for the EVI in English?

Every year, UCEQA inspectors identify classic mistakes in EVI papers that are common in language exams. 1 – Students often misunderstand the essence of some tasks due to general unpreparedness or simple inattention. 2 – Poor time management. 3 – Lack of strategy and a “plan B” when something goes wrong or an unexpected question arises that the student is unable to answer immediately.

What is included in the EVI English test?

The exam covers English language levels from A2 to B2 or from Elementary to Upper Intermediate. The total text volume in the “Reading” section is up to 2,500 words. For the “Language Use” section, applicants must have a minimum vocabulary of 2,500 words. The tasks often cover the following topics: all parts of speech, types of sentences, tenses, word combinations, word formation, and direct and indirect speech.

When to start preparing for the EVI in English?

The ideal time to start preparing for the EVI in English is three months before the exam. However, this rule does not apply to everyone. During this time, students with basic knowledge will have time to prepare thoroughly, while applicants who regularly practiced English before registration will need less time. But if the candidate does not have a basic level, it is necessary to choose a preparation program for a longer period.
