Frequently asked questions about internships for students
What is an internship, and why is it necessary?
Internships are an important part of preparing students for the challenges of today’s highly competitive job market. They are a form of training or work for people who have basic knowledge in a particular field but do not yet have experience. An internship at a large company provides important insight into how a particular player in the market operates and what employers offer their employees. It is the solution to the puzzle of how to get a job without work experience.
What types of internships are there?
There are several types of internships in Ukraine and abroad. The first type is professional, which is usually organized by large companies for a group of students and provides an opportunity to get a job after the internship period ends. The second type is cooperative education, in which students combine study and work. There are also volunteer, research, and short-term seasonal internships, which are especially popular abroad and are often part of international exchange programs.
Do you need to know a foreign language for an international internship?
Yes, in most cases, knowledge of a foreign language is necessary for an internship abroad, because students have to communicate at work and conduct official and everyday communication in a new place. Most countries require international test results for entry. To pass these tests and learn the language, AP University students take preparatory courses that not only allow them to obtain a sufficient language level score, but also to feel confident abroad and communicate with native speakers on an equal footing.
Are internships paid?
If it is an internship in Ukraine, then payment for the work of a person without experience is provided for by law, but in international internships, everything is a little more complicated: usually, internship programs are designed for a certain amount that covers travel and accommodation. However, there are some, such as Work and Travel, that allow you to work and pay for your living expenses, as well as save for the future. The amount of pay depends on the country of the internship. Programs created by non-profit organizations do not provide for any compensation of expenses, and students must arrange their own travel.
What documents are required to participate in an internship?
The following documents are usually required: resume (CV), cover letter, recommendations (if necessary), if it is an international internship, then a passport and visa, diploma or certificate from the educational institution. For internships abroad, language proficiency certificates and medical insurance are also required.
Is it possible to combine an internship with studies?
It depends on the number of hours the student spends on the internship and studies. If you are doing an internship in Ukraine, it is usually possible to combine them, as most institutions consider experience in the field as professional development and take it into account in the assessment of studies. After an international internship, institutions accept the student’s achievements and results and evaluate their work separately. Therefore, this combination has been proven to be more effective than studying without an internship.
How do I choose the internship that is right for me?
When choosing an internship program, there are a few things to consider. First, you need to start with the field in which the company operates, so that it is relevant or related to the student’s field of study. Next, consider the format of the internship. It is important that it does not interfere with your schedule or studies, and then you need to find out if it is paid and if the company offers employment after completion. If you plan to participate in an international internship, check whether your skills meet the requirements, whether you have the required level of foreign language proficiency, and whether you are ready to take the test. After such preparation, you will understand what is appropriate to choose.
Are there age restrictions for internships?
Requirements for students vary depending on the program. The law on official employment restricts students by age, meaning minors are not allowed to officially work or intern full-time. The same rule applies abroad, so only those who are 18 years of age or older can participate in international internships. Often, these programs also have restrictions on the maximum age: people between the ages of 18 and 25-30 can participate in internships.
Is it possible to stay and work after the internship?
Many companies offer employment to students who have successfully completed an internship and demonstrated satisfactory results sufficient for employee qualification. This is common practice among employers in Ukraine and abroad. However, you should not count on this option in advance, because when a company offers an internship, it does not always have job openings. Therefore, if you hope to continue working with the company, you should definitely discuss this with the HR manager or ask other employees on site.
How do I apply for an internship?
You can send your application to the official website of the programs if you are well versed in the procedure. If this is your first time, it is worth learning about all the nuances, because it is not easy for a beginner to get an internship. Representatives of many companies often visit educational institutions in Ukraine on their own. They help students with the submission of documents. If it is a company that has not sent any offers or a company abroad, we recommend finding a competent intermediary. AP University is such an intermediary — we help you collect all the necessary documents, write a motivation letter, prepare for a language test, and comply with all requirements to increase the chances of your application being accepted.
