How education works in Germany

Higher education in this country differs significantly from our exams, sessions, and seminars.

  • Students go there to study because it is a competitive player in the global market. It ranks third among all countries in terms of GDP per capita, with more than $50,000. And it surpasses the US in terms of quality of life.
  • From Einstein to Kant, from Schumacher to Zimmer. It has given the world perhaps the greatest number of geniuses in science, culture, and sports, thanks to its educational approaches.
  • It takes 3-4 years to obtain a bachelor’s degree. A master’s degree takes 1-2 years, and an integrated master’s course takes 5-6 years.
  • In addition to programs in the national language, German institutions also offer English-language programs.

Higher education institutions in this country are divided into classical (universal) and applied (narrowly specialized). So, students always have a choice: to obtain higher academic degrees or to start working without higher education.

Terms and features of admission to Germany

Ukrainian applicants will not be able to study at a German higher education institution immediately after the 11th grade, because schoolchildren there spend 13 years in school and manage to cover a larger program. Therefore, you will have to complete a preparatory program at a college (Studienkolleg) or enroll in the first year of another institution, and then apply again.

As for studying at German institutions after the 9th grade, these applicants will need to spend at least 4 years to enter a university.

Admission campaign dates (2 semesters – 2 application periods):

  • for the winter semester: end of April – July 15.
  • for the summer semester: end of November – January 15.

Advantages of studying in Germany

The “price-quality” rule does not apply here, because Germans sell one of the most valuable services in the world at low rates.

Free education

Many state universities offer this option to both citizens and migrants.

High standard of living and quality of teaching

It is thanks to progressive approaches to education that the country has achieved record results and now tops the rankings.

Academic freedom

Students choose whether they want to study for a long time or have found their niche and do not need to pursue a higher degree.

Part-time work during studies

Most students need to work, so they are allowed to miss a certain number of classes if it does not affect their results.

Legal employment for graduates.

Students do not need to spend several years trying out different professions and spending a lot of time searching job sites. The prospects here are clearly defined.

Citizenship after several years of work.

Studying in Germany is especially relevant for Ukrainian refugees, because here they can not only find shelter during wartime, but also become full-fledged citizens and plan their future in a new country.

Frequently asked questions and answers about studying in Germany

What documents are required for admission to a German university?

To enter a German university, you need: a certificate of complete secondary education (according to German rules), a certificate of knowledge of German or English, a statement of intent to enroll, and a letter of recommendation (if necessary). For creative majors, a portfolio is required. After receiving an invitation from the university, you must apply for a student visa, confirm your financial support, and obtain health insurance.

What level of language proficiency is required: German or English?

In Germany, students can choose the language of instruction, but it should be noted that the number of programs available in English is significantly smaller than in German. The recommended minimum level is between B1 and B2. This will ensure an accurate and comprehensive understanding of academic information — listening comprehension, reading, writing, and fluent communication — so that almost any education in Germany is accessible to English-speaking Ukrainians.

Do you help with applying for a student visa to Germany?

We fully support applicants at all stages of the admission process. Our assistance includes coordinating the submission of documents and communicating with visa centers during the application process. It is desirable to have experience in the bureaucratic process. That is why we offer qualified support, because it is difficult for a young person without experience in such procedures to try to do this on their own.

Are German diplomas recognized outside the country?

Yes, German higher education diplomas are recognized abroad, as the state has signed various international educational conventions and agreements that apply to the entire European Union. The situation is the same in many countries in other parts of the world. However, certain (regulated) specialties require additional confirmation of qualifications abroad, regardless of such agreements.

Are there programs for applicants who do not know German?

Yes, education in Germany is partially available in English. Each institution has a specific list of specialties for which there are separate programs in English — this is intended to expand the audience, internationalize the university, and attract new students and teachers.
